Update on the Café Expansion

April 27, 2011

In typical fashion, our little construction project has taken a bit longer than we originally expected, but don’t they all? That said, it’s going well and I wanted to give you an update of where we are.

If you hadn’t heard, we’re taking over four new rooms of space adjacent to the café in the same building. The new space sits behind the counter area in the café.

A few more things need to be updated but, structurally, we’re pretty much ready to go. The fire department punch list includes a few items like casing around a door and a small hole in the drywall that needs to be repaired to achieve the fire rating. We’re just about ready for the final inspection and hope to have our occupancy certificate within a month.

As with most renovation projects, you go through the big push, and get all the big stuff done and then the last 10 or 20 percent of the job is all little things that aren’t as obvious or gratifying as the major construction.

I’ll be moving my office into the new space, which is a daunting job. The thought of moving the electronics and getting everything set up into working order again is a little intimidating. Moving the packing operation over to the new space will be a breeze in comparison. And, we already store a good amount of green coffee over there, so that piece is pretty much done.

The fourth room in the new area is open space right now. That room will be dedicated to staff training and cupping. We’ll have a small espresso machine set up for sampling espresso blends and training. I’m very excited to have this new space and I look forward to settling into it. We already have some other ideas percolating (pun intended) for the new space so keep an ear to the ground for announcements.
